Laurentian Ski Hall of Fame – LSM
At the age of 16, Joan Goodwin-Wilson left Ontario for Quebec to obtain the Level 1 Instructor certification from the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance (CSIA). Enchanted by the Laurentians, she taught for three years at Mont-Tremblant and earned her CSIA certification in 1960, ranking first among women. At the age of 25, in 1962, she became the director of the Mont-Habitant Ski School, making her the first woman to head a ski school in the country. By then a CSIA Level III instructor, she developed the first “Ski Camp” program, spanning 12 weekends, allowing thousands of new skiers to learn the sport. She also contributed to the professionalization of ski instruction, including through her approach to standardized testing for children, adopted by the Alliance, as well as her evaluation and ongoing training sessions for instructors, which were quickly adopted by many other ski schools.
