Club de Ski Mont-Royal
(1919 - 1930)
The first francophone ski club in North-America
Inducted in 2011
Founded by Champlain Provencher, the Club de ski Mont- Royal d’Amérique was the first francophone ski club in North America. In Quebec, the sport was seen as elitist and reserved for the anglophones. Despite warnings from the clergy that the club is “the enemy of family and of good values, the Club moved forward. The Club helped to introduce members of French Canadian bourgeoisie to skiing. After the First War, however, skiing remained a sport largely dominated by Anglophones and the Club’s activities fizzled out during the 20s.
