In 1959, Robert Fugère raced with the Club Épervier. In 1961, he won the downhill event at the Canadian Championships. In 1962, he joined the National Team but an injury forced him to stop competing. He returned in 1963 but hurt himself again and he had to give up the Olympics. In 1966, he tried again but another fracture put an end to his ski career. He then started teaching and became the youngest level IV in the Canadian Ski Instructord’ Alliance and the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation . That same year, he became coach of the National Team. He founded the first team “Espoir” a program meant to help young skiers to eventually join the National Team ranks. When he quit as head of the National Team in 1970, he was one of the best trainers in the country.
